Don't forget your Party Animal!

Since Mardi Gras in New Orleans officially starts today, February 12th 2010 there is purple, green and gold everywhere!

Because many of us can’t be in New Orleans for this festive and fun event we have to bring the festivities to us!

Maybe you are attending a Mardi Gras party in your neck of the woods or maybe you are hosting a Mardi Gras themed party yourself. It would only make sense that when you are buying the Mardi Gras beads, plates and party accessories that you not leave your little “party go-er” out either.

A Mardi Gras dog tee would be cute, or possibly you have a spunky little diva girl who wants to be the center of attention, try the Bright Mardi Gras Feather Dog Tutu and Coordinating Hair Bow.

Maybe your dog isn’t into dressing for the occasion, you could slide on the Mardi Gras hair clip and still be a part of the fun! How about a festive Mardi Gras dog party collar or put some beads on your dog, but be careful that they don’t get tangled and only keep on for some "party pics".

Any direction you go to dress your dog for a occasion, make sure it is a comfortable fit for your pet. Some dogs just don’t like to be dressed up and some love the attention and will sit patiently while you try different outfits on him. Just be patient and find the right fit.

So, whether you are on Bourbon Street or in the Northwest or snowy Dallas, remember you can still throw a party for Mardi Gras and dress everyone to the occasion! Mardi Gras is still a great choice for a themed party any time of the year, whatever the party, don't forget your dog, this biggest party animal of all!

Pet Beds.....so many types to choose from!

We all love our pets so much, but to what extend does that love go? Would we ask those sweet little doggies to sleep on a cold floor? Heck no! Not my sweet pups!

Just like humans, pet beds come in a variety of sizes, colors, brands, price range and comfort. Some pet beds look just like our human furniture and some pet beds are made with the older dog in mind. Some pet owners want their pet’s beds to match the décor of their home, no problem at all.

When purchasing a dog bed there are many things to consider:

Where does your pet sleep? Some pets sleep in the living room, some pets sleep in the owner’s bedroom.

What is the size of your pet? If you have a jumbo dog, chances are.. He will stretch out and won’t even be on the bed anymore. If you have a small little pet, buy one that fits his size so he will be comfy and not feel lost on the bed.

Do you prefer to have one to wash a lot? If so, watch for removable dog bed covers that you can wash in your washing machine.

What is your price range? There are dog beds that range in so many prices; you can choose a cheaper end pet bed (especially the way the economy is) or more of an upscale dog bed if you have a doggie Diva.

There are so many options available these days for a pet bed: heated beds, pillow beds, pet dens, furniture style beds, novelty fun beds or outdoor pet beds and the list goes on. The choices are unbelievable!! There are cat beds too!

Humans sleep on comfy mattress’s so why not put your best buddy on a bed just as wonderful as yours!

Tools for the Teeth!

We are so busy with our own periodontal care, trips to the Dentist, teeth whitening, gum care and flossing that we forget that our pet’s teeth are of great importance too.. until we smell that breath! MAN! What did he eat?

Your dog probably won’t LOVE having their chompers brushed but it really is a necessity, especially if he has yucky breath. With repetitive care and brushing he might actually start to like it.

If you are not able to have your Vet clean their teeth (which is the most recommended way), learn how to brush your dog's teeth yourself. A quick brushing a couple of times a week is far better than nothing at all.

You will need the correct tools before you start the dog teeth brushing experience:
  • A pet toothbrush ~ there are many to choose from-ones with finger attachments, ones with extra fancy handles and bristles , you can just use a gauze sponge if you want.
  • Pet Toothpaste~ Maybe a poulty flavored toothpaste or something a bit sweet or just plain old Baking Soda will work. Don’t use human toothpaste.
  • Go ahead and prepare for clean up with the washcloth and towel because it can get messy.
There are pet care sets available like Kissable dog toothpaste and toothbrush that will include both items needed, all in one.

Feeding your dog dry dog food or hard dog biscuits everyday and provide a hard toy or bone to chew on will help with odor and will help prevent periodontal disease and other infections and gum diseases. Certainly a dog mint or two every now and then won’t hurt either!

Valentine's Day is about love...

Valentine’s Day is one month away and it is a time to let those we love know it!

Don’t forget the one who loves you unconditionally, the one that doesn’t care what you look like, or how much money you make, or even that you have been a bit grumpy lately. Your dog is beside you all the time and loves you no matter what, and he shouldn’t be left out on Valentine’s Day.

We all know that times are hard these days, but giving a pet Valentines Day gift isn’t hard and won’t break your bank but will show him that you love him and that you appreciate him for being a constant companion.

A Valentine’s Day Dog Tank would be a great little outfit for your dog on the special day or even a Puppy Love Sweater.

Maybe you have a prissy little one, and for our doggie diva’s a Shades Of Pink Princess Bling Dog Tutu and Matching Hair Bow or a Sterling Silver Puff Heart Collar Charm.

Maybe you need something a little more “manly”, the Black Studded Tank Top should do the trick.

If you dog isn’t cool wearing clothes, try out some dog treats, dog toys or maybe a precious new collar!

We know that all our pets could use a new bowl and this Valentine’s Day, there are great new dog bowls to fit your pet’s personality.

Whatever you choose, whether it’s a gift, or extra time with your pet, or just a small treat, let him know how much you love him on this Valentine’s Day!

Winter blast and your pets

With the Artic Blast headed our way and colder temperatures than normal across the country and some wind chills down to zero, it is so important to keep our family pets safe and warm.

Because animals rely on their human caregivers to keep them safe, especially in these harsh winter months, it is important to take a few extra steps to take care of the ones we love.

You might think that because dogs have fur that they are protected from the cold and harsh weather, but the fur has a tendency to gather ice or snowflakes that can make even the furriest dog cold. Dogs get cold and there are things that we can do to prevent serious health issues in the dead of winter.

Make sure that your dog has an adequate doghouse outside if you have to leave him out. Although it is not recommended to leave any pet outside in the cold elements, if they absolutely must be left outside please make sure there is a closed warm area for him to lay.

Keep your pets away from Antifreeze. Dogs love it but even in small amounts could be deadly.

Make sure you are checking your dog for frostbite and drying his fur when he enters back into the home. Ear tips are especially susceptible to frostbite on dogs and snow can get up in the footpad of your pet as well.

Get your dog winter apparel to help make them more comfortable. There are dog boots to protect the paws and even dog socks for those cold nights. Try a nice dog sweater or winter coat to make sure they are warm when going out into the freezing winter weather.

Trim the hair around your dog’s feet. You can even apply Vaseline or cooking oil to the bottom of their feet before going outside. The layer of oil or moisture barrier will prevent ice from sticking to their paws. You could try Snout Smoother for chapped ears and dry skin!

Try not to use salt on the sidewalks because it can be irritating to the footpad. If they do get salt on the foot are, wipe off as soon as the come in.

Watch your pet’s diet. Pets can get lazy during the winter months and can gain excessive weight. Find interactive dog toys to keep him busy and moving around.

Don’t ever leave your dog in a car, hot or cold. If you cannot take them in, leave them at home.

Keep your dog out of water during freezing weather- canine hypothermia can set in quickly. Keep him away from rivers, lakes and stream as the ice can break and they fall in.

It isn’t too hard to take extra precautions for our pets, especially in weather like this and by making some adjustments and buying a few extra pet accessories, he will be warm and toasty when going outside!

Pets are making a big statements in the United States!

You have seen the commercials, watched the videos about animal cruelty and for me, I cannot hardly continue to watch as it becomes too heart-wrenching. There could be a light at the end of the tunnel for pet's everywhere!

Pet stores all around the US are making a statement of faith by putting up the “puppy friendly” signs in their windows.

The puppy friendly pledge states the store’s commitment to NOT sell puppies and stand firm and support local animal adoption programs and help to educate their customers about how to find a puppy and where to find reputable sources to purchase a pup.

"Pet stores that profit from the cruel puppy mill industry need to stop their puppy sales. We encourage people who want a new pet to first consider adoption from local shelters and rescue groups, which are filled with healthy, loving dogs who need a family of their own this holiday," said Stephanie Shain, senior director of The HSUS' puppy mills campaign.

Puppy Mills continue to breed dogs in unhealthy and unsafe environments and then sell to pet stores which in turn, sell to you. The dogs at puppy mills spend their time in cramped cages or kennels with no personal touch or contact or attention and have no quality of life. Here are some facts about puppy mills and why Posh Puppy Boutique does not support puppy mills or cruelty to animals of any kind:

• Puppies born in puppy mills are more likely to develop health and/or behavioral issues than puppies who are born to reputable breeders.
• Puppy mills contribute to the pet overpopulation problem, which results in millions of unwanted dogs euthanized at shelters every year.
• Unhealthy and cruel treatment of dogs is what puppy mills are all about just selling in mass production of dogs and making money

There are so many things that we can do as pet owners to help stop the cruelty to animals and mass production of dogs and puppy mills. You can donate or visit the Human Society’s site and make a difference. Check independent retailers in your area and see if they have signed the puppy friendly pledge, and if not~ encourage it~ as it is our duty as pet lovers and humans to stop this inhumane treatment of animals.

Posh Puppy Boutique believes in dogs and animals of all kind and encourage love and support for animals. Join us in making a difference today!

Include your pet on your New Year Resolutions!

New Year's Resolutions are not just for humans, we can make a change with our pet's too!

When we are making our New Year's resolutions of losing weight, or giving up soft drinks, or attending church more, we all make them and whether or not we stick to our resolutions or not, it is tradition to make New Year's Resolutions.

How about including your pet in your resolution this year? Not like buying him more toys or petting him more, but something of real consistency and value. How about commit to a healthier life for your dog? Walking your dog can sure help your dog get the exercise that he needs to walk off the pounds and I am pretty sure it won’t hurt you either.

What about your pet’s diet? Are you giving your dog fatty foods from your table which can lead to more health problems? Maybe you should check into better and more nutritious food for your dog this New Year. See your vet if you have any special concerns about your dog’s diet and he can recommend a good brand to fit your pet’s needs and often times, they sell it at the vet clinic. This might include your treats too because those can be unhealthy too.

Maybe you would like to take better care of your dog in general, that would start with your pet's health from the inside out. When you have a healthy pet you will notice a they will be a lot more active and in turn will save you very expensive pet vet bills in the end and make you a better pet owner.
When you have a healthy dog, you will notice that they are happier and a lot more active. So, if you have not yet started to look at your dog's diet and exercise routine, now would be the perfect time at the start of a brand New Year.

Why not invest in a pet treadmill or items to make your pet more active?
You could get him some Joint tablets to help with his achy joints or just to keep him moving~ or just start by reading about the bond between you and your dog with the "Bond for Life" book.

We know that if we could hear our dog speak, he would be making resolutions too, like not sleeping so much or possibly no vomiting in the formal living room, or shaking off the muddy water as he runs in the house, no chewing of the stuffed animals, or drinking the commode water. BUT.. I am sure our dogs would really appreciate our help by setting the standards for a healthier lifestyle and the rest I am sure will fall into place.

Happy New Year to you and yours from Posh Puppy Boutique!

A quick and cheap gift, just may be your DOG!

We all know that there are people out there that are not honest and trustworthy and might just be panicked and need a quick gift for the season.. so you assume they will run out to the store.. right? WRONG.. your dog might be their gift to someone else.

Dognapping is on the rise according to the American Kennel Club especially in these hard economical times. Pet theft has risen 30% in the past couple of years. It is so sad to think that your best buddy could end up in the hands of someone else.

There are obviously many safety tips for your dogs, but we often miss the most obvious ways to keep our pet safe:
  • Don't leave your dog unattended. Never leave your dog outside a store or a food establishment while you just "run in". Leave your dog at home.
  • Don't leave your dog outside for extended periods of time
  • Make sure you have a lock on your backyard gate so intruders cannot come in and get Fido
  • Have your pet microchipped to ensure his safety
  • Keep your dog on a leash when taking your walks. Your dog can get distracted and run off and that may be the last you see of him.
  • Think about the AKC's Lost Pet Alert if your pet is stolen or missing. This service works like an Amber Alert for pets and sends out an e-mail notification to veterinarians, shelters and animal control agencies within a 50-mile radius.

We take care of our children, why not take care of our pets by taking extra precautions. Fore more information you can visit The Good Morning America site and see their new story.

Give back this Holiday Season!

When I think of Cancer, I think of my family members that have expired and left this earth and took their life early. I guess I didn't really realize how many pets get cancer too.

There are some common types of canine cancer:
  • Mouth Cancer

  • Prostate Cancer

  • Bone Cancer

  • Mast Cell Tumor Cancer

  • Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) has named November as Pet Cancer Awareness Month! This year is the fifth year that VPI works hard and diligent to raise awareness of Pet cancer and educating pet owners on resources and support.

In the last couple of years VPI has reported the rise of pet cancer. VPI started their awareness in 2005 and since then have raised a large amount of money to aid in the help of pet cancer and pet cancer awareness.

If you are a VPI policy holder and a pet owner, you are urged to contribute to this wonderful cause by buying a VPI limited-edition Pet Cancer Awareness dog collar. The beautiful collars with the Cancer Society logo is available in 4 sizes. You can also find a great cancer awareness pet accessories at Posh Puppy!

All money raised by VPI during the month of November will be donated to the Animal Cancer Foundation (ACF). ACF is a non profit organization that works to help in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer in people and our pets.

For more information on signs and symptoms of cancer in our four legged friends, talk to your vet or read here! However you help, just help this wonderful cause.

Keep the turkey away from your little turkey!

Oh... the smell of the turkey, pumpkin pie and that stuffing, all waiting for your consumption on Thanksgiving day... absolutely mouth watering... for us and for your furry little follower!

This Thanksgiving, keep it drama free and make sure you take precautions to keep all safe, including your little "turkey". The day sometimes gets so busy and we are exhausted when it is all over we can make small little mistakes that could be deadly to our pets. Be smart this year and follow some basic steps to ensure safety!

    Safety tips at Thanksgiving:
    • Don't feed your pet leftovers or give them little "samples" of what your whipping up. Dogs can get sick on high fat foods, and can develop Pancreatitis. This isn't a easy thing for your dog to get over.
    • Watch the bones! I know we all think it is ok to give your dog the bones to chew on, but the truth is, they can break and splinter causing major internal damage to your pet.
    • No chocolate! Chocolate contains Xanthine, a compound called theobromine. Chocolate can be fatal to your dog, so watch the pies and candy bowls!
    • Bloating, not a fun thing to feel... Just like humans, dogs can get bloated, but the difference is, Bloat is a deadly condition that gives you a very limited amount of time to respond. Don't feed your dog when he is excited or there are alot of people still around, they tend to "gulp" down their food causing major stomach problems and there is no Alka Seltzer for them.

All in all, be smart on Thanksgiving and keep your pets save and just be thankful we have them around.
