Include your pet on your New Year Resolutions!

New Year's Resolutions are not just for humans, we can make a change with our pet's too!

When we are making our New Year's resolutions of losing weight, or giving up soft drinks, or attending church more, we all make them and whether or not we stick to our resolutions or not, it is tradition to make New Year's Resolutions.

How about including your pet in your resolution this year? Not like buying him more toys or petting him more, but something of real consistency and value. How about commit to a healthier life for your dog? Walking your dog can sure help your dog get the exercise that he needs to walk off the pounds and I am pretty sure it won’t hurt you either.

What about your pet’s diet? Are you giving your dog fatty foods from your table which can lead to more health problems? Maybe you should check into better and more nutritious food for your dog this New Year. See your vet if you have any special concerns about your dog’s diet and he can recommend a good brand to fit your pet’s needs and often times, they sell it at the vet clinic. This might include your treats too because those can be unhealthy too.

Maybe you would like to take better care of your dog in general, that would start with your pet's health from the inside out. When you have a healthy pet you will notice a they will be a lot more active and in turn will save you very expensive pet vet bills in the end and make you a better pet owner.
When you have a healthy dog, you will notice that they are happier and a lot more active. So, if you have not yet started to look at your dog's diet and exercise routine, now would be the perfect time at the start of a brand New Year.

Why not invest in a pet treadmill or items to make your pet more active?
You could get him some Joint tablets to help with his achy joints or just to keep him moving~ or just start by reading about the bond between you and your dog with the "Bond for Life" book.

We know that if we could hear our dog speak, he would be making resolutions too, like not sleeping so much or possibly no vomiting in the formal living room, or shaking off the muddy water as he runs in the house, no chewing of the stuffed animals, or drinking the commode water. BUT.. I am sure our dogs would really appreciate our help by setting the standards for a healthier lifestyle and the rest I am sure will fall into place.

Happy New Year to you and yours from Posh Puppy Boutique!

A quick and cheap gift, just may be your DOG!

We all know that there are people out there that are not honest and trustworthy and might just be panicked and need a quick gift for the season.. so you assume they will run out to the store.. right? WRONG.. your dog might be their gift to someone else.

Dognapping is on the rise according to the American Kennel Club especially in these hard economical times. Pet theft has risen 30% in the past couple of years. It is so sad to think that your best buddy could end up in the hands of someone else.

There are obviously many safety tips for your dogs, but we often miss the most obvious ways to keep our pet safe:
  • Don't leave your dog unattended. Never leave your dog outside a store or a food establishment while you just "run in". Leave your dog at home.
  • Don't leave your dog outside for extended periods of time
  • Make sure you have a lock on your backyard gate so intruders cannot come in and get Fido
  • Have your pet microchipped to ensure his safety
  • Keep your dog on a leash when taking your walks. Your dog can get distracted and run off and that may be the last you see of him.
  • Think about the AKC's Lost Pet Alert if your pet is stolen or missing. This service works like an Amber Alert for pets and sends out an e-mail notification to veterinarians, shelters and animal control agencies within a 50-mile radius.

We take care of our children, why not take care of our pets by taking extra precautions. Fore more information you can visit The Good Morning America site and see their new story.

Give back this Holiday Season!

When I think of Cancer, I think of my family members that have expired and left this earth and took their life early. I guess I didn't really realize how many pets get cancer too.

There are some common types of canine cancer:
  • Mouth Cancer

  • Prostate Cancer

  • Bone Cancer

  • Mast Cell Tumor Cancer

  • Veterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) has named November as Pet Cancer Awareness Month! This year is the fifth year that VPI works hard and diligent to raise awareness of Pet cancer and educating pet owners on resources and support.

In the last couple of years VPI has reported the rise of pet cancer. VPI started their awareness in 2005 and since then have raised a large amount of money to aid in the help of pet cancer and pet cancer awareness.

If you are a VPI policy holder and a pet owner, you are urged to contribute to this wonderful cause by buying a VPI limited-edition Pet Cancer Awareness dog collar. The beautiful collars with the Cancer Society logo is available in 4 sizes. You can also find a great cancer awareness pet accessories at Posh Puppy!

All money raised by VPI during the month of November will be donated to the Animal Cancer Foundation (ACF). ACF is a non profit organization that works to help in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer in people and our pets.

For more information on signs and symptoms of cancer in our four legged friends, talk to your vet or read here! However you help, just help this wonderful cause.

Keep the turkey away from your little turkey!

Oh... the smell of the turkey, pumpkin pie and that stuffing, all waiting for your consumption on Thanksgiving day... absolutely mouth watering... for us and for your furry little follower!

This Thanksgiving, keep it drama free and make sure you take precautions to keep all safe, including your little "turkey". The day sometimes gets so busy and we are exhausted when it is all over we can make small little mistakes that could be deadly to our pets. Be smart this year and follow some basic steps to ensure safety!

    Safety tips at Thanksgiving:
    • Don't feed your pet leftovers or give them little "samples" of what your whipping up. Dogs can get sick on high fat foods, and can develop Pancreatitis. This isn't a easy thing for your dog to get over.
    • Watch the bones! I know we all think it is ok to give your dog the bones to chew on, but the truth is, they can break and splinter causing major internal damage to your pet.
    • No chocolate! Chocolate contains Xanthine, a compound called theobromine. Chocolate can be fatal to your dog, so watch the pies and candy bowls!
    • Bloating, not a fun thing to feel... Just like humans, dogs can get bloated, but the difference is, Bloat is a deadly condition that gives you a very limited amount of time to respond. Don't feed your dog when he is excited or there are alot of people still around, they tend to "gulp" down their food causing major stomach problems and there is no Alka Seltzer for them.

All in all, be smart on Thanksgiving and keep your pets save and just be thankful we have them around.

Don’t TOY around with your pet’s toys!

Sure! Toys are great for your dog! We all want to grab those “precious little squeaker” toys when we are at the grocery store, but there is more to buying a pet toy than just thinking it is cute.

How to choose a safe pet toy:
    • Limit the toys to ones that are specifically designed for dogs
    • Make sure there are not small pieces on the toy that your dog can swallow or choke on.
    • Be careful of toys with the “squeakers” as they can ingest quickly once they have gotten it out of the toy. Make sure that the toys is a "pet toy" if you want a "sqeaker", as not all "sqeaker's" are bad.
    • Be careful of giving your dog one of the kid’s stuffed animals. It may cause confusion and you don’t know what kind of fiber it is made of.
    • Choose a toy that fits your dog’s personality. If he is attached to your socks, chances are he will like a plush toy, if a “chewer”, a rubber toy may be best. If your dog is like mine and curious about everything, try and interactive toy.

What toys do for your dog:
    • Keeps your doggie busy and helps distract from bad behavior
    • Gives a outlet for energy build up
    • Allows you to play with your pet, and give a “reward” other than treats.

    Great toys for your dogs:
    • Kongs: Kongs come in a large choice of sizes for dogs of all ages. They have Kongs for puppies and Kongs for senior dogs. This rubber toy has holes in both ends and can be stuffed with many yummy goodies, keeping your dog safely occupied!
    • Nina Ottosson Dog Dizzy: Fill the ball with treats or dry kibble and let the dog have fun by working the Dizzy to retrieve the reward. The Dizzy is bottom weighted in an off center location which makes the ball to roll and twist in different directions but it always stops in the upright position.
    • Personality Plush Toy:Personality Pull Plush Toy - Angel or Devil? Cats or Squirrels? Food hound or napper? Whatever your pups personality we have the perfect pull toy. Bright colors, a squeaky center, and thick rope pulls on either end ensure the perfect tug-of-war plush toy. Choose from three distinct personality types or collect them all. These toys are made of the best dog friendly materials.

Whatever your choice of pet toys (and there are alot out there), make sure you pick a safe toy for your buddy!

    • Shelter Outside: Please make sure your dog house fits your dog appropriately. Make sure your dog can stand up, turn around but not too big that he or she loses heat. Make sure bedding is clean and dry and that your shelter is off the ground for protection from the elements.
    • Keep your pets away from water during the winter as the water begins to freeze
    • Check dog paw pads for cuts and cracks from dry skin, check out these great winter boots!
    • Check your dogs ears, tail and feet for frostbite! If your dog is a outside dog, make sure his skin does not become red or gray.
    • Make sure you check food and water during the winter months. Make sure the water or food is not frozen.
    • Provide warmth for short haired dogs, this wonderful dog sweater will keep your pooch warm on those night walks!

    • Keep puppies and older dogs indoors and only outside for a short time as they are more fragile in the cold weather.
    • Keep your identification tags updated!
    • Please stay away from Antifreeze! Clean up spills as fast as you can! OR.. be on the safe side and find a pet friendly antifreeze, ones that contain propylene glycol.
    • Keep up grooming in the winter, as skin can become dry and itchy, try Fur Butter by Happy Tails, its great! Regular brushing keeps your dog's coat supple and prepared for the cold. However, when you bathe your pet, be sure to dry his coat thoroughly before allowing him outside.

There are many great cold weather items that you can get for your dog now, so try them out!

It's not too late to dress him up!

If you are running behind and don’t have time to go out and buy your pet a Halloween costume, there are many things sitting around your house that you can figure out a SPOOKY get up for your pooch!

Here are a few ideas for a Homemade pet costume: (Remember you can use regular clothes, items and hair color to make your dog be just about anything)

    • Skunk – use white hair color spray down the back of your black pooch
    • Prisoner in Jail - Buy an orange sweater and put a number of the back
    • Zebra – use hair color as well to make stripes
    • Disco Dog – buy an afro at a Halloween store and stick on your dog with some beads

There are many things you can do with stuff around your house to make a homemade pet costume. Be creative and let the kid’s participate, but make sure whatever you put on your pet or decide to put him in, that it is a safe item for your pooch. You can purchase many grooming products to help the transition from cute to COOKY.

    SPIT out that gum!

You wouldn’t think that chewing gum could hurt your dog, but this SPOOKY season, BEWARE cause it can! When your kids are unloading their Halloween treats make sure you keep your doggie away from the candy and especially the gum, especially the sugar free gum!

The Xylitol in sugarless gum can be toxic, and can cause liver failure in your dog. According to the Animal Poison Control Center, last year they managed over 170 sick pets after eating products containing Xylitol.

    Items that contain Xylitol are:
    • sugarless chewing gum
    • sugarless candy
    • mouthwashes and other oral care products
    • oral pharmaceuticals, such as certain types of vitamin supplements
    • sweeteners packaged for use in the kitchen

Xylitol is a sugar-alcohol sweetener found in sugar-free human food products such as chewing gum, candy, baked goods as well as other products. Dogs that ingest certain items with Xylitol can develop a sudden drop in blood sugar, which can cause weakness, lethargy, loss of coordination, collapse and seizures. Not what any pet owner wants to go through.

If you find that your pet has eaten candy or gum and you are unsure what the active ingredients are, call your local Poison Control Center or vet immediately. Symptoms can occur in 15-30 minutes after ingesting the product.

Don't take this litely it CAN happen. According to Snopes this is a true and correct warning. For a list of other products that can hurt your pet check with your vet or search the internet.

So, keep purses, treat bags, and candy out of the reach of our furry little friends and it will keep you and your best friend out of the Animal ER!

    Patience is a Virtue!

Halloween is almost here and that means that your pet will be sporting his favorite Halloween costume!
If you are like me and enjoy taking pictures, it is a must to know how to take the best pictures of your pets.

Suggestions for taking pet pictures are:
1/  Use treats : Bribery and motivation is the key. Pick a yummy treat and use it to your advantage.

2/  Use good light: While outdoors is the best light; if you must take indoors make sure it is a well lit room and use your flash.

3/  Background: I know we all want to stick pumpkins around Fido and spooky decorations but it’s not the best for the picture and most of the time causes distractions.

4/Don’t get crazy with the costume: We all know that some costumes can be uncomfortable. Make sure you let your dog move around for a bit in the costume and make sure you put on the headpiece last before snapping the picture!

5/ Make sure that you get down to his level: Don’t try and take the picture from up above him. Kneel down and snap his photo from his level. It will make for a better picture.

There is additional information on taking pet photo's on most pet websites!
After you take the pictures, share with your family and friends! We all need a good laugh, and if you have not gotten your best buddy a Halloween costume yet, you better hurry! Check out Posh Puppy Boutique's great Halloween costumes for your dog!

Did your "Buddy" make the cut?

Every year I just anticipate the arrival of the Top Dog Breeds of the Year announced by the American Kennel Club. With 2010 approaching I thought I would give a re-cap of this years “top dogs”.

The 2009 Top Dog Breeds of the Year are:

    Yorkshire Terriers
Also known as “Yorkies”, these small but spunky dogs are high energy and very loyal.

    Dachshunds
WOOO HOOO! I love those little “weiner dogs”! With long bodies and shorts legs, they tend to fool ya! They are playful, fun and sometimes grumpy with strangers!

    Beagles
Remember “Snoopy”? This strong little buck is sweet and gentle and loves his family.

    Miniature Schnauzers
Miniature Schnauzers are smart, obedient and love to engage in non-aggressive play. They'll play well with children and or chew toys.

    Labrador Retrievers
Labeled the most “popular” dog of all, the dogs are lovable, smart and friendly and perfect with kids!

    Boxers
The American Kennel Club says that the Boxers “play well with children, are extremely loyal and are low maintenance dogs”.

    Golden Retrievers
These large dogs are extremely kind and gentle by nature and love playing with people and their toys. Make sure you have enough room for this big boy!

    German Shepherds
One of the most lovable dogs around and so smart that is why they are every police force’s choice for their K-9.

    Shih Tzu
They finally made the list! This adorable dog is cute and cuddly and obviously the most popular in Hollywood.

    Poodles
Poodles are beautiful, loyal and extremely intelligent dogs which makes them popular among everyone!

Check back in Jan and see if your baby made the cut!

    Is your buddy getting "Pudgy"?

With winter fast approaching and the weather outside changing, Fido may not be getting his exercise~chasing birds and Frisbees and frolicking in the sun and may pack on a few pounds or so.

Since we all try to take care of ourselves with our memberships to the gym and our “mall walking” friends, why not let your best friend look trim and healthy too!

The new pet treadmill is wonderful! Exercise anytime, anywhere, any weather!

Treadmill training can give a dog a great workout regardless of weather or environment, allowing owners to maintain a watchful eye. It provides increased muscle definition, toning, improves vitality, increases life span and can help curb destructive behavior or excess energy often associated with the lack of regular exercise. Often it is used as rehab for injuries to dogs as well.

These treadmills come in three sizes to best fit your dog and his size, small, med and large for the big boys!

Why not put the pet treadmill next to your and throw in a video (maybe “Homeward Bound” or something) and start walking! What a great way to “bond” with your buddy!
